Apr. 28, 2025

Regina, SK — It wasn’t pretty. It wasn’t easy. But that’s exactly how the Weyburn Razorbacks wanted it.

In what can only be described as a hard-fought battle, the Razorbacks opened their season with a 15-14 road victory over the Regina Chaos, showing a level of grit, determination, and resilience that defined their performance from start to finish. In a game where nothing came easy, the Razorbacks dug deep, clawing their way back from a deficit to secure a thrilling win that will set the tone for the season ahead.

The game was a fast-paced, physical affair, with both teams trading blows throughout. In the end, the Razorbacks’ ability to battle through adversity and their unwavering commitment to the game were the key ingredients in their success.

Key Performances:

At the forefront of the victory was Ryder Hignett, who delivered an unforgettable performance, registering six goals and four assists. From the opening faceoff, Hignett was a force, bulldozing through defenders, using his powerful stick and quick feet to create scoring opportunities. His relentless drive set the tone for the Razorbacks, pushing them forward and proving that no challenge was too great.

Sam Borschowa was equally dominant, contributing three goals and six assists, effectively playing the role of playmaker and scorer. Borschowa's presence on the floor was impossible to ignore as he threaded precision passes and executed timely shots, putting his stamp on every major play. His chemistry with Hignett was evident, and together, they provided the perfect one-two punch for Weyburn.

When the Razorbacks needed a spark, Jack Missal was there, delivering four crucial goals at just the right moments to shift momentum in Weyburn’s favor. Missal’s knack for finding the back of the net in high-pressure situations was evident, as he proved to be the kind of player who rises to the occasion when the stakes are highest.

In addition to their scoring leaders, key contributions came from Nash Hignett and Vann Dennis, who each netted a vital goal in the game’s final stages. Hignett’s goal helped keep the Razorbacks’ momentum alive, while Dennis' timely strike ensured the game remained within reach. Additionally, players like Jessica Benning, Wyatt Mickler, and Kaden Chrest played important supporting roles, keeping the ball moving and creating space to disrupt Regina’s defense.

On the defensive end, Coach Keenan Cummings had his team locked in, forcing the Chaos to fight for every inch of the floor. The defense was unyielding, with players putting their bodies on the line and staying disciplined despite the relentless pressure from Regina. It wasn’t always pretty, but the Razorbacks’ defense did just enough to keep the Chaos from running away with the game.

In goal, Matthew Charlton was nothing short of spectacular. Facing a barrage of 65 shots, Charlton stood tall, making 51 saves and ensuring the Razorbacks remained in the game when it seemed like Regina might pull away. His performance was a testament to his composure and focus, especially when the game was on the line in the final minutes. Charlton’s resilience and ability to make crucial saves in key moments was a defining factor in Weyburn's victory.

Power Play and Penalty Kill:

One of the game’s pivotal moments came during the Razorbacks' power play opportunities. Despite only converting on 2 of 6 chances, the power play provided crucial goals when it mattered most. In contrast, Regina struggled to capitalize, with the Razorbacks' penalty kill stepping up in key moments, especially when facing short-handed situations.

The Final Stretch:

As the game entered the final period, the Razorbacks found themselves trailing, but the team’s resilience was on full display. A series of key goals from Hignett, Borschowa, and Missal, coupled with timely saves from Charlton, helped the Razorbacks claw their way back into the lead. In the final minute, Hignett’s sixth goal of the night sealed the victory, sending the Razorbacks home with a hard-earned 15-14 win.

Looking Ahead:

The Razorbacks will now turn their attention to their Home Opener on May 3, 2025, at 7:00 PM at the Tom Zandee Sports Arena, where they will face off against the Prince Albert Predators.
